South Korea will carry out a shooting drill near the Yeonpyeong border. The preparation took place after North Korea launched hundreds of fires artillery shells at the Yeonpyeong Island border. Seoul issued a statement rejecting North Korea’s launch of 200 bullets.
North Korea Is Considered Provocative Toward South Korea
South Korea feels that North Korea is doing provocative things in the Yeonpyeong border area. This action disturbed the existing peace on the Korean Peninsula. North Korea needs to immediately stop these provocative actions. Residents living in Yeonpyeong have also been asked to evacuate by local officials. Evacuation is carried out as a precautionary measure if a dangerous incident occurs (caused by North Korea). Residents in conflict areas explained that they felt afraid while in the refugee barracks. Artillery shelling from North Korea started from 09.00 to 11.00 local time.
The bullets that North Korea fired fell in the buffer zone. The last time artillery shelling carried out by North Korea fell in the maritime buffer zone was in 2022. That year, North Korea fired approximately 170 artillery pieces. The direction of the gunfire was towards Yeonpyeong Island, which caused two civilians to die.
Responding to possible danger from North Korea, an official explained that Seoul would plan firing drills in the western border area. This incident also prompted the South Korean government to form joint military exercises between the United States and South Korea.
Relations between the two countries have been at their lowest point in the last decade. North Korea has also launched a surveillance satellite in 2023. According to First Post, Kim Jong-Un also stated that war (between North Korea and South Korea) could break out at any time. They launched artillery due to the pressure exerted by the United States in the Korean Peninsula area. This area has been the Korean Demilitarized Zone since 1945. Kim Jong-un stated that he did not want to negotiate with his neighboring country anymore. North Korea also intends to increase the number of spy satellites by 2024. The launch of new satellites is also aimed at promoting the development of space-related technology and science.
