No one expected that the MCU’s earnings from The Marvels would be the worst throughout its first opening in theaters. This latest film only earned $47 million, which is lower than The Incredible Hulk, which was released in 2008. The Incredible Hulk itself set a record for the lowest grossing of an MCU opening with a value of $55.4 million last year.

What’s Wrong with the MCU and the Marvels?

According to CNBC, The Marvels is expected to gross at least $75 million to $80 million. The estimated figure was getting smaller, with a gross of $60 million to $65 million in the first opening. However, Marvel still made a profit with international ticket sales, which reached $110.3 million. This film’s domestic debut was very bad, according to MCU history. Their income really depends on international ticket sales.

International interest in MCU films has been demonstrated. Many critics of this film are not too enthusiastic about giving assessments to The Marvels. One example of a film critic is Rotten Tomatoes, which only received a rating of 62%. However, the struggle to increase the rating has been carried out by various parties. The storyline is very different compared to Avengers: Endgame, making the Marvels have to fend for themselves. The film received quite a lot of pressure because it was not supported by various other Marvel Studios figures.

The Digital Trends website also conveys several reasons why The Marvels has a poor track record. The reason films don’t sell well is due to many factors, such as bad scripts and villains. Many film critics assess that the script used in the film is still in an immature stage. Supposedly, the script needs to undergo a lot of refinement before it reaches production. There are many scripts for The Marvels that seem less soulful and are more similar to the first script, which is still raw. Then there was criticism that the villain in this film lacked an evil character and background. The villain’s character development is less appropriate than that of other villains in MCU films.

The director was also considered too focused on the comedy elements of the film. The comedy and humor elements are excessive, killing the climax of the story in the film.
