Japan experienced a magnitude 7.6 earthquake on Monday. The earthquake caused 6 people to die according to local authorities. The earthquake also caused damage to buildings, communication systems and transportation. Even electricity power was cut off during the earthquake. This large earthquake also triggered a tsunami. The height of the tsunami waves reached 1.2 m and swept the western coast of the country.
The impact of the earthquake and tsunami was quite large for Japan
The electricity supply to households in Ishikawa prefecture was cut off. There are at least around 45,000 households experiencing electricity power disruption in the prefecture. Electricity supply comes from Hokuriku Electric Power. The local government has warned residents to evacuate due to the threat of a tsunami. The Japanese government’s defense ministry has sent 1,000 personnel to carry out recovery and rescue. There were 31 aftershocks after the main earthquake of magnitude 7.6 occurred according to The United States Geological Survey. The large number of aftershocks caused an increasing number of buildings to collapse. Apart from that, the aftershocks also caused several fires that destroyed local community property. At least more than 90 houses and tuku were burned due to the earthquake.
The train transportation system in Japan was also delayed for several hours due to earthquake and tsunami. According to CNN, there were 1,400 high speed train passengers who were stranded when the earthquake occurred. There were no reports of passengers getting sick while waiting on high speed trains. according to NHK. Infrastructure in prefectures affected by the earthquake and tsunami suffered a lot of damage. The roads in Ishikawa Prefecture are full of cracks. The airport at Noto Airport also canceled two flights. Meanwhile, Komatsu Airport canceled up to 15 flights. The Shika nuclear power plant only suffered minor damage so it was not dangerous. There were no abnormalities that occurred as a result of the two natural disasters regarding Shihka nuclear power.
